Limit of Heat: 14th Seasonal Node (August 23 – September 6, 2026)
August 23, 2026 starts Limit of Heat, the 14th of the 24 seasonal nodes. This is the second stage of Autumn.
As the Yang Qi in living things begins to draw inward, nature turns its energy toward harvest and gathering.
This is a season of transition. We still feel the heat of summer during the day, but signs of autumn are beginning to appear: cooler mornings and evenings, an occasional falling leaf, and sunlight becoming more golden, especially in the late afternoon.
What's Happening in Nature
Days are getting shorter, we’re losing about 18 minutes of daylight each week
Afternoons are still hot while mornings and evenings are cooler
Morning dew is becoming heavy enough to soak your shoes
Crickets are fully grown and especially loud now, creating a full chorus of sound at night.
Seasonal Self-Care
In summer, it’s normal and healthy to get up early and stay up later. As we move into autumn, start going to bed earlier to give the body more time to rest. Even moving bedtime up by 30 minutes can help us adjust to the changing season.
Autumn is the season of the Lungs. In Chinese medicine, the Lungs are connected to Qi. The more you engage with the Lungs, the more you engage with Qi. Breathe slowly through the nose, letting the lungs expand softly and naturally, like a balloon, then exhale slowly through the nose, letting everything reset back to its natural state.
In class, our Qi Gong practice will begin to shift toward supporting the Lungs, while still nourishing the Spleen and Stomach during this seasonal transition.
Psycho-Emotional
During Limit of Heat, yang qi continues to wane. The energy is no longer pushing outward and upward like it did in spring and summer. It’s beginning to draw inward.
As the energy shifts, make a little more space in your day and week to create some breathing room. Chinese medicine and Daoist tradition have long emphasized maintaining a peaceful and positive state of mind during autumn.
And as we enter harvest season, take a moment to reflect: What have I grown and brought to fruition?
Food for late summer / beginning of Autumn (Five Element Nutrition)
During Limit of Heat, eat fewer summer melons and very cold foods. Introduce gently moistening foods like pears, honey and yams.
Continue supporting the Spleen and Stomach with simple cooked foods like rice, millet, quinoa and root vegetables.
Include a small amount of warming herbs like ginger or cardamom in cooking to support digestion and help offset the dampness of Indian Summer.
In Chinese dietary therapy, pear is traditionally used to moisten the Lungs and generate body fluids.
Here’s a recipe incorporating pears and cardamom.
Simmered Pear with Cardamom
Slice a pear and slowly simmer it in a small amount of water with a tiny pinch of cardamom until just soft. Add a little honey once it’s cooled slightly.
Conclusion
We still feel the heat of Summer, but we’ve already entered into autumn. The energetic shift happens before the full physical expression of the season becomes obvious.
Limit of Heat reminds us that change doesn’t happen all at once. Everything unfolds in its own time and at its own pace. One small step leads to the next, and over time, meaningful change happens.
